The United Kingdom government has announced that only international students arriving for their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) studies are eligible to bring dependents to the country.

British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, disclosed this in an interview on Sunday in Abuja.

The UK initiated the dependent visa ban on January 2, 2024, prohibiting Nigerian students and other foreigners from bringing family members.

Montgomery explained that the policy change earlier this year for international students in higher education aims to prevent the increase of foreign students bringing in dependents.

He highlighted that the surge in dependence was straining many universities, leading to the introduction of these changes.

Before his posting as High Commissioner to Nigeria, Montgomery had discussed the policy change with universities, which had been in the pipeline for some time.

The universities’ Chancellors had raised concerns about the large student populations, including challenges with accommodation, access to medical services under the National Health Service, and access to schools if dependents were brought in.

Montgomery clarified that the restrictions do not apply to all categories, noting that those pursuing a long-term research degree, such as a PhD or doctorate, are not affected.

He stated, “Those coming to the UK for a doctorate can still bring their dependents, but if you are coming with a study visa for an undergraduate degree or a short-term master’s degree, I’m afraid the rules have been changed.”

He emphasised the rationale behind the change, considering the significant presence of universities across the country and the strains they face.
