Two US officers, paramedic shot dead in tragic domestic violence response

Two Minnesota police officers and a paramedic tragically lost their lives while attending to a domestic violence incident on Sunday morning. Governor Tim Walz stated that officers and first responders were summoned to assist a family in peril in Burnsville, Minnesota.

The Dakota County dispatch reported that authorities were addressing an incident involving weapons. Additionally, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives confirmed its agents’ response to the “domestic-related shooting” in Burnsville, located approximately 15 miles south of Minneapolis.

“Jason Skog, a resident in the neighborhood, recounted hearing what seemed like a firecracker or a flash-bang around 5 a.m., followed by gunfire. He mentioned that police instructed residents to shelter in place.”

According to the outlet, two police officers and a paramedic were fatally shot. WCCO detailed the presence of fire trucks, ambulances, police vehicles, and SWAT units at the scene. Additionally, it was reported that one of the SWAT vehicles had multiple bullet holes on its windshield.

Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar posted on a social media platform stating that three officers, in total, were shot while “carrying out their duties” of “protecting the community.”

Governor Walz emphasized, “We must never take for granted the bravery and sacrifices our police officers and first responders make every day.” He expressed his solidarity with the families affected by the tragedy and reiterated that the entire State of Minnesota stands with Burnsville.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said, “Please keep Burnsville Police Dept in your prayers this morning.”

The Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association stated , “We are heartbroken. Our law enforcement community is heartbroken. We’re just devastated at the horrific loss. These heroes leave behind loved ones and a community who will forever remember their bravery and dedication to keeping Minnesotans safe.”

Rep. Jim Nash said, “My heart is heavy for the families of these officers, the community of Burnsville, and for our country because this headline is not unique.”

Secretary of State Steve Simon declared the incident as “sickening and shocking.” He expressed his prayers for the first responders, their families, and the community of Burnsville.

 

Rep. Betty McCollum also commented on the tragedy, stating, “Horrible news from Burnsville this morning. My heart is going out to their Department and the entire community.”

Governor Walz has issued an order for flags to be lowered to half-staff beginning at sunrise on Monday as a sign of respect and mourning for the fallen officers and paramedic.
