Jose Peseiro has confirmed his resignation as the head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

Peseiro confirmed this in a post made on his official social media page on Friday, March 1, 2024.

This comes after the expiration of his contract, just after the recently concluded 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

He wrote, “Yesterday, we concluded our contract with the NFF.

“It was a pride and honor to coach the Super Eagles. It has been 22 months of immense dedication, sacrifice, emotion, and enormous enthusiasm. We feel a sense of fulfillment.

“We would like to express our gratitude to Sir Amaju Pinnick (the president who signed us), President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, Secretary Dayo Enebi, the NFF, all the Staff, and especially all the PLAYERS, with whom leading has been a great pleasure.

“Guys, we are thankful; it has been a privilege to be part of this family. We will miss you, but we will always be there for you, no matter where you are. A big hug to all of you.”

Peseiro guided Nigeria to a second-place finish in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire, with a 2-1 loss to the hosts in the final. Despite securing silver, criticism arose regarding Peseiro’s strategy, prioritizing attacking creativity over defensive solidity.

Meanwhile, the Algeria Football Federation is considering hiring coach Jose Peseiro, who led Nigeria to the 2023 AFCON finals, following Djamel Belmadi’s dismissal due to Algeria’s poor performance in the recent tournament.

Belmadi was fired after the team failed to progress past the group stages. Algerian publication DZ Foot reported that federation president Walid Sadi is impressed by Peseiro’s credentials and intends to discuss the national team job with him.

“Not made public, the shortlist established by the ad-hoc commission set up by the FAF, is made up of three names, namely José Peseiro (63 years old), Vladimir Petkovic (60 years old) and Carlos Queiroz (70 years old),” the website wrote.
