On Friday, three Chinese companies operating in Mozambique generously contributed a collection of medical equipment to the Maputo Central Hospital (HCM), the nation’s largest medical facility.

The donation encompasses electric drills and various surgical instruments. Mouzinho Saide, the director general of HCM, expressed gratitude, noting that the provision of multiple drills at once represents a significant advancement for the hospital.

“Despite the difficulties we face, we are not alone; the equipment we received today will make all the difference; it will allow us to have many more surgical operations, and many patients will benefit from it, so we are very happy,” stated the HCM director general, while addressing the ceremony.

Saide emphasised that the donated materials would greatly enhance the hospital’s ability to treat its predominantly trauma-afflicted patients, often victims of accidents or assaults.

With many patients awaiting surgical procedures, the shortage of medical supplies has led to extended waiting times.

He expressed optimism that this donation would alleviate the strain on hospital beds, facilitating swifter and more effective treatment for those in need.

“China’s friendship and presence in our country is not new; it’s quite old and long-standing.

“And in recent times, it has been strengthened with the cooperation of the government itself, which is why we have received medical teams from China who also support the Maputo Central Hospital, working side by side with national doctors, so our feeling is one of gratitude,” declared Saide.

Xu Shuguang, representing the Chinese enterprises WengLong I&E Ltd., Hengli Moz. Ltd., and Auto Sunshine Ltd., revealed that the donation stemmed from a recommendation by a Chinese doctor working in the orthopaedic department at HCM.

Aware of the hospital’s challenges with medical supplies, the doctor suggested specific items for procurement.

Xu explained that they “acquired the items based on the doctor’s list and donated them on behalf of the local Chinese community, expressing satisfaction in being able to assist.”
