The Jamaican government, through High Commissioner Mr. Lincoln Downer, expressed its eagerness to foster a strong partnership with Nigeria in the film and animation sectors. This announcement was made during a visit to Minister Barr. Hannatu Musa Musawa in Abuja.

Downer highlighted the existing creative exchanges between Jamaica and Nigeria, underlining Nigeria’s support through initiatives like the technical eco-program, which has facilitated exchanges in crafts such as Batik and jewellery-making.

He emphasised the potential for collaboration, especially in film and animation, citing Nigeria’s significant contributions to Jamaica’s creative industry. Downer also underscored the close ties between the two nations in entertainment, with Nigerian artists like Burna Boy, WizKid, and Victor Thompson making waves in Jamaica.

Celebrating 54 years of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Jamaica, Downer expressed Jamaica’s interest in deeper collaboration, recognising Nigeria’s cultural significance globally and expressing a desire to strengthen ties.

Minister Musawa welcomed the proposal, expressing interest in Jamaica’s Audio-Visual Film Production Agreement and film development initiative, akin to Nigeria’s IDICE program supporting creatives financially.

She echoed the sentiment of a natural partnership between Nigeria and Jamaica in arts and culture, expressing excitement about the proposed cultural exchange and looking forward to discussing further opportunities to support creatives.

Additionally, Mrs. Zainab Ali-Biu, Director of International Cultural Relations, sought Jamaica’s support in proposing an International Day for Afrobeat Music to UNESCO.

The meeting’s details were captured in a statement by Nneka Anibeze, the minister’s SA on Media and Publicity.
