After four months, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai published his asset declaration details on June 24, 2024, estimating his net worth at $970,419.60.
The disclosure, mandated by Chapter 11, Article 90 of the Liberian constitution and Section 10.1 of the 2014 Code of Conduct for public officials, revealed President Boakai’s financial standing.
His assets include an income of $43,400.47, with assets valued at $61,295.96 and liabilities amounting to $201,500. Notably, his real estate holdings are appraised at $766,391.07, with personal property valued at $212,400.
In an official press release, President Boakai emphasised that his asset declaration demonstrated his commitment to transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership.
By making his assets public, he aimed to set an example for other public officials and citizens.
However, local media reports indicated that President Boakai acknowledged a form error and requested the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) return the declaration for corrections. Many viewed this move skeptically, questioning its sincerity amidst concerns of potential fraud.
Critics, including political commentator David Menjor, doubted the accuracy and completeness of the published assets.
Menjor specifically questioned the modest amounts of cash on hand and in the bank, as well as the declared annual income, suggesting that without rigorous audits, the data’s integrity remains questionable.
Similarly, concerns raised by George D. Brooks and Timothy Brooks about the President’s declared income and the absence of certain known assets, such as properties believed to be owned by President Boakai, added to the skepticism.
Political opponents criticized the delayed declaration as a failure of true transparency, arguing that compliance with legal requirements alone does not suffice. They called for more stringent measures and independent audits to ensure the credibility of asset declarations by public officials.
While President Boakai’s move towards transparency is significant, the scrutiny highlights ongoing challenges in achieving full accountability in Liberia. As pressure mounts, the President faces expectations not only to uphold his commitments but also to ensure future actions leave no doubt regarding his dedication to transparency and integrity.
