Cape Verde has received official recognition from the World Health Organization (WHO) for being malaria-free.The West African archipelago, consisting of nine islands, was granted this status during a live ceremony attended by WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Cape Verde’s Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva, expressed his appreciation for the milestone, highlighting the positive impact on the country’s main economic activity, tourism.

This achievement positions Cape Verde as the third African country, after Mauritius and Algeria, to attain elimination status for malaria.

Despite Africa carrying a significant malaria burden, this accomplishment underscores progress in combating the disease.

In 2022, Africa accounted for 94% of malaria cases (233 million) and 95% of malaria deaths (580,000), according to the WHO.
