The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on Tuesday proclaiming May 25 as World Football Day.
This decision marks the 100th anniversary of the first international football tournament during the 1924 Summer Olympic Games in Paris.
The draft resolution, introduced by Libya’s permanent representative to the UN, Taher M. El-Sonni, garnered support from over 160 countries.
“Football, or soccer as others call it, is the number one game played and followed around the globe,” El-Sonni stated, emphasizing its universal appeal.
Dennis Francis, the president of the General Assembly, welcomed the adoption of the resolution, highlighting football’s role in promoting camaraderie, teamwork, and peace.
