The Global United Methodist Church is experiencing a new twist in its internal debate, as the Southern Conference in Taraba State Nigeria has distanced itself from the recent decision by the General Conference to endorse same-s3x marriage within its ranks.
During a press briefing held in Jalingo on Saturday, the group labeled the decision as “unholy” and “unethical”, firmly rejecting the legislation adopted at the General Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA.
Led by Rev. Philip Micah Dopah, the Director of Connectional Ministries, the church leadership emphasized its adherence to scripture, asserting its stance against the approved legislation.
At the recently concluded General Conference, the approval for LGBTQ individuals to be ordained as pastors, partake in same-s3x weddings and hold any church position was met with disapproval from the Southern Conference.
Denouncing the decision as contrary to Christian teachings, the leaders affirmed their allegiance to the scriptures and traditional Christian doctrine as articulated by John Wesley of England.
They reassured members of their commitment to upholding traditional Christian values and urged calm while indicating plans to address the issue further. Additionally, they emphasised compliance with Nigerian law, which prohibits same-s3x marriage and LGBTQ practices.
The decision of the Southern Conference underscores the ongoing tension within the global United Methodist Church regarding LGBTQ inclusion in church affairs.
