Ugandan marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegui, who recently competed in the Paris Olympics, is in critical condition after suffering burns to over 75% of her body.
The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday afternoon when her boyfriend, Daniel Ndiema Marangach, allegedly doused her with petrol during a domestic dispute.
Local media in both Kenya and Uganda reported on Monday that Cheptegui is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Eldoret, Kenya.
The 33-year-old athlete, who placed 44th in the Paris Olympics, owns a house in Kenya where she resides while training.
Trans Nzoia county police commander Jeremiah Ole Kosiom confirmed that Marangach was also injured in the attack, which is now under investigation.
