Two people have been confirmed dead after a five-storey building collapsed in Egypt.

The incident occurred on Tuesday in the working-class area of Mit Ghamr in the Nile Delta governorate of Daqahliya.

Rescuers are still searching for other victims who might be trapped under the rubble, with one resident confirmed to be alive under the rubble.

Ambulances remain at the scene in anticipation of any other injuries or deaths.

Daqahliya Governor Ayman Mokhtar said in a statement that the old building collapsed after one of the residents set up a crane at the base of the structure to move household furniture.

The prosecution is investigating the incident.

The accident is the latest in a series of building disasters in Egypt over recent years that have injured and killed residents.

In June 2023, a 21-year-old man identified as Sameer Hussein Mohamed Hussein after a 13-story apartment building mostly used by Egyptian holidaymakers, in Alexandria’s Sidi Bishr area collapsed.

Two more people were rescued alive from the building itself.

Four passersby were injured, according to Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health and Population Amira Tahio in a phone interview earlier in the day with the Al-Hadath satellite channel.

These accidents are often due to old or compromised structures.
