For the past 15 years, Borno has been at the heart of an Islamist insurgency that has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions.Despite ongoing efforts by the Nigerian military to weaken the militants, they persist in carrying out deadly attacks against civilians and security target.
Barkindo Saidu, the Director-General of the Borno State Emergency Management Agency, provided details of devastating attacks in the town of Gwoza, where suspected suicide bombers targeted a wedding, funeral, and hospital.
The incidents resulted in a tragic toll of 18 confirmed deaths, including children, adults, and pregnant women.
Saidu described the injuries sustained as severe, including abdominal ruptures, skull fractures, and limb fractures.
No group has asserted responsibility for the attacks. Borno state police were unavailable for immediate comment.
Boko Haram and its splinter faction, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), remain the most active militant groups in Borno, operating across a vast rural expanse equivalent to the size of Ireland.
