At least six newborns perished in a fire at a children’s hospital in Delhi, India, late on May 25, according to officials reported by NDTV.

The Delhi Fire Services were alerted to the blaze at a baby care center in the Vivek Vihar area of East Delhi at 11:32 pm, prompting the dispatch of 16 fire engines to the scene.

Officials stated that 12 newborns were rescued from the ground floor and transported to East Delhi Advance NICU hospital, as reported by The Times of India.

In a post on X, Indian news agency Asian News International quoted Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj, stating that six of the newborns had suffocated, and one was in critical condition. He added, “We will take such strict action that none of the officials commit such negligence in the future. We are with the families who have lost their babies.”

A video of the incident, shared by Asian News International on X, depicts a fire engine parked in front of a building with sirens blaring in the background.

Thick black smoke obscures part of the building, while flames rage through the lower floors as firefighters work to extinguish the blaze.
