In western Pakistan, two customs officers were killed by unknown gunmen on Sunday, adding to a string of attacks targeting customs officials in the region over the past few days.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, which occurred on Thursday and Sunday, and authorities are currently investigating the incidents.
According to Muhammad Adnan, the district deputy superintendent of police, the customs officials were conducting checks when they came under fire from unidentified assailants.
“Customs officials were present for checks… when unknown persons opened fire,” he stated. Two individuals were injured in the attack, and the area, located along a busy highway, has been sealed off for investigation.
Just three days prior, five customs officials, including an officer, were fatally shot in the same area by attackers who managed to escape.
“Three days ago, five officials, including an officer, of the customs department, were killed in a shooting in the same area and the attackers escaped,” Adnan mentioned.
The recent surge in attacks has heightened tensions between Pakistan and the Taliban-led administration in Afghanistan, particularly given the deteriorating security situation along the border regions shared by the two countries.
Pakistan has accused militants of utilizing Afghan territory as a base for launching attacks and has urged the Taliban to address the issue.
In response to these concerns, Pakistan conducted an airstrike on Afghan territory last month.
However, the Taliban have denied allegations of harboring militants and insist that Pakistan’s security concerns are its own domestic affair.
