Three Spanish tourists were tragically killed by gunmen in the central Afghanistan city of Bamiyan, as confirmed by the Spanish government.
Afghan officials reported the death of an Afghan national, with four foreigners and three Afghans sustaining injuries in the attack.
While no group has claimed responsibility, Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman Abdul Mateen Qani stated that four individuals had been apprehended.
Mr. Qani emphasised that the Taliban government vehemently condemns the crime, extends condolences to the victims’ families, and pledges to bring all perpetrators to justice.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed deep sorrow upon learning about the tragic killing of Spanish tourists in Afghanistan.
He extended heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the victims and assured them of ongoing consular support. Additionally, Spain’s foreign ministry confirmed that at least one Spanish national was among those injured in the incident.
The mountainous region of Bamiyan, where the attack took place, is renowned for its UNESCO World Heritage site and the remnants of two colossal Buddha statues destroyed by the Taliban in 2001.
Despite the Taliban’s pledge to enhance security and promote tourism since reclaiming power in Afghanistan, the country continues to face threats from groups like the Islamic State, perpetuating instability and insecurity.
