Teacher commits suicide in Zambia leaves note detailing financial struggles

Panford Mweetwa, a 46-year-old teacher formerly of Maguya Day Secondary School in Chipata District, Zambia, tragically took his own life on Wednesday, June 3, 2024, by ingesting a toxic substance.

Mweetwa, who had recently been transferred from Nsanjika Day Secondary School to Maguya, left a poignant note detailing instructions on how his money should be distributed.

The note partly reads; “There are also Benefits from Napsa and my leave benefits and repatriation Should be gries to my wife who is going to take care of my children.

“Use the money to build a house for Your self and the children and the Other money you start business.

“You should shift to Lusaka er Kafue immediately after my funeral and start life the ‘re. Remember B. Natson there is a K2000 for Rentals.

“Tell Pilford that I love him so much with the love of a brother

“I am just tired of this life that lama Leaving I have loved on this earth You know that I have always worked hard but I have nothing to show.

“Don’t understand this type of life also anyway it’s fine.”

Eastern Province Police Deputy Commanding Officer Stephen Mayoko confirmed that Mweetwa, a teacher, had informed his wife he was going to Chipata town but was later found unconscious at 10 p.m.

“He was initially taken to Katandala Clinic and then referred to another hospital where he was admitted.

“Before passing away, Mweetwa revealed that he had intentionally ingested a poisonous substance in an attempt to end his life. His body is currently at the mortuary, awaiting burial arrangements,” the police chief said.

The incident has shocked the community, highlighting the challenges and pressures faced by educators.
