Sudan has declared 15 employees of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) embassy persona non grata, instructing them to depart the country within 48 hours, as reported by Reuters.
According to Reuters, the Sudanese foreign ministry communicated this decision to the acting UAE Chargé d’affaires, Badriya Al-Shahi, without providing further details.
The move follows accusations in November 2023, when a senior Sudanese officer alleged that the UAE was supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group founded by the deposed former dictator Omar al-Bashir, currently engaged in conflict with the army.
In response, a UAE official stated that the UAE had consistently advocated for de-escalation, a ceasefire, and the initiation of diplomatic dialogue in Sudan since the onset of the conflict over seven months ago.
The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) issued a warning on November 7, 2023, highlighting the escalating scope and brutality of the war between rival militaries in Sudan. Since its eruption in April 2023, this conflict has displaced nearly six million people, exacerbating an already complex humanitarian crisis.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, echoing his predecessor Colin Powell from two decades ago, declared the situation in Darfur as genocide.
Blinken attributed war crimes, including crimes against humanity, murder, rape, sexual violence, deportation, forcible transfer, and persecution, to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), holding them responsible for ethnic cleansing in Darfur.
In a notable development, the commander of the RSF, Mohamed Dagalo (Hemedti), and General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, the head of the Transitional Sovereign Council of the Republic of Sudan, have agreed to meet in person. The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is expected to organize the negotiations, appointing a team of experienced diplomats and negotiators for the process.
