Serena mute on quitting tennis

Seven-time Wimbledon singles champion, Serena Williams has failed to respond to speculation on her retirement and any chances of playing at the US Open scheduled for August.

Serena, who has slipped down the rankings to number 1,204, doubts her involvement in Wimbledon again after she lost to France’s Harmony Tan on Tuesday in the first round of the Open.

Asked whether it would be her last appearance at the All England Club, the 40-year-old American said: “That’s a question I can’t answer. I don’t know. Who knows where I’ll pop up?”

Williams won the last of her 23 Grand Slam titles at the 2017 Australian Open and remains one shy of equalling Margaret Court’s record for the most major titles.

Though she reached the final at four majors since returning to the Tour after giving birth in 2017 but she has lost in straight sets on each occasion.

Williams’ sister who is chasing Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles – said she did not want Tuesday’s loss to be her final memory.

“Obviously not,” she said. “You know me. Definitely not.

“I gave all I could do. Maybe tomorrow I could have given more. Maybe a week ago I could have given more. But today was what I could do. At some point, you have to be able to be OK with that.

“When you’re at home, especially in New York and that being the place I first won a Grand Slam, it is always special,” she said.

“There’s always motivation to get better and play at home.”
