Wednesday morning saw a barrage of rockets launched from Lebanon towards northern Israel, following Israeli airstrikes that claimed the lives of four Hezbollah officials, including a top military commander.
The Israeli military reported detecting approximately 90 projectiles, with some being intercepted, and several fires ignited as a result of the strikes.
Among those killed was Taleb Sami Abdullah, 55, known within Hezbollah circles as Hajj Abu Taleb. His demise marked the highest-ranking commander to fall since the conflict began eight months ago.
The incident unfolded amidst escalating tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border, with Hezbollah escalating attacks on northern Israel while Israeli airstrikes targeted deep inside Lebanese territory.
Hamas responded to the U.S.-backed proposal for a cease-fire in Gaza on Tuesday, stating that it seeks “amendments” to the deal.
While not fully accepting the terms, the group’s reply kept negotiations alive for a potential end to the ongoing eight-month war.
Although generally supportive of the proposal, Hamas officials have voiced concerns about Israel’s commitment to implementing key provisions, such as a permanent cessation of hostilities and a full withdrawal from Gaza in exchange for the release of all hostages held by the militant group.
Since Hamas’ attack on October 7, Israel has been engaged in a war with the group in Gaza, resulting in over 37,100 casualties, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
The conflict has led to severe humanitarian crises, with Palestinians facing acute food and medicine shortages. UN agencies warn that over 1 million people in Gaza could face starvation by mid-July.
The war began after Hamas militants launched an assault on southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 individuals, predominantly civilians, and the abduction of around 250 others.
