A protest has erupted in Kano amid the ongoing dispute for the throne of the Emirate between Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero. Bayero, the dethroned Emir of Kano, has refused to vacate the palace, defying the directive of the state governor, Abba Yusuf.
According to Daily Trust, around 4:00 pm on Sunday, young residents took to the streets of Kano to demand the return of the dethroned monarch.
The protesters, who had gathered after a special prayer session, marched towards the palace where Emir Sanusi was holding court. Some demonstrators lit a bonfire on a major road and chanted anti-government songs.

Bayero was deposed on Thursday following the signing of a new law by Governor Abba Yusuf that repealed the Emirate Council Law 2019.
The 2019 legislation divided the Kano emirate into five jurisdictions and provided grounds for the dethronement of Muhammadu Sanusi in 2020. Sanusi was reinstated as the 16th Emir of Kano at a colorful event at the government house on Thursday and has since moved into the palace.
Bayero returned to Kano early Saturday and moved into the palace in Nassarawa LG. In response, the governor ordered his arrest. A detachment of soldiers continues to monitor the dethroned monarch.
