The President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, has sacked the entire board of the Tanzania Electricity Supply Company (Tanesco) in response to widespread dissatisfaction among Tanzanians caused by frequent power outages. The president reportedly dissolved the board in a statement on Thursday, December 21, 2023.

This move follows her previous decision to dissolve the Board of the Tanzania Railways Corporation in April due to mismanagement of $215 million.

Additionally, the CEO of the Tanzania Government Flight Agency was sacked over a $49 million fraud.

The interruptions in power supply in Tanzania are a result of power rationing, which is attributed to lower water levels in dams and ongoing repairs to power lines. This has led to a significant deficit of 400 megawatts.

Among those affected by reassignments is Major General Paul Kisesa Simuli, the current chair of the Tanesco board, who now serves as Tanzania’s ambassador to Uganda. Dr. Rhimo Nyanzaho, formerly the director of business at Azania Bank, has been appointed to take over Simuli’s position.

Tanzania’s situation parallels that of Kenya, which has also experienced widespread power outages recently.

President William Ruto has attributed these blackouts to malfunctioning power lines and assured the public that his administration is actively working to address and maintain the infrastructure.

The power cuts have notably impacted critical facilities, including the busy Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
