The operatives of Nasarawa State Police Command have arrested a police inspector for allegedly raping and impregnating his 15-year-old niece
The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), in conjunction with the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Response team, reported the officer as an Inspector attached to the State Intelligence Bureau (SIB).
The state chairperson of FIDA, Mrs Rabiatu Addra told journalists on Wednesday in Lafia, that the incident was among the series of sexual abuse cases being handled by the body.
She said the development came to light following a report by a whistleblower when the victim was already five months pregnant.
She said, “On receipt of the information by the whistleblower, FIDA in conjunction with Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Response Team, facilitated and mobilised police officers to get the suspect arrested.
“Our team with the police took the victim to the hospital and paid for her treatment but unfortunately she lost the six-month-old baby.
“The state ministry of Justice further paid the bill for a DNA test as part of the ongoing investigation to ascertain the real culprit.”
When contacted, the spokesman of the state police command, DSP Ramhan Nansel denies knowing of the case.
