A Nigerian police inspector Adabo Mohammed has been dismissed for participating in a robbery gang that stole N29.8 million in Abuja.

Nigerian Police Force (NPF) spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi announced this in a statement on Friday.

According to Adejobi, Mohammed and five others were part of an armed robbery gang that stole N29.8 million from a victim during a robbery in the Gwagwalada area of Abuja.

He added that the dismissed officer was also involved in the kidnapping of Ikechukwu Emmanuel Okafor in the Tunga Maje area of Abuja, for which they collected N4.4 million in ransom.

“The ex-officer has been charged to court accordingly,” Adejobi said.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun also approved the demotion of three inspectors to the rank of sergeant over alleged extortion.

The demoted officers, identified as Osagie Efford, Semiu Agbekin, and Francis Ahuen, were attached to the special tactical squad (STS) in the FCT. They intercepted an unregistered Mercedes Benz in the Gwarinpa area and forced the occupants to part with N29.4 million.

“While the monies have been returned to the complainants, the officers were subjected to orderly room trial in line with extant laws, and have been demoted,” Adejobi said.

This incident follows the dismissal of two police constables five months ago, who were caught on video demanding money from a Dutch tourist in the Ojongbodu area of the Iseyin-Ogbomoso Road in Oyo State.

The constables, Jimoh Lukmon and Kareem Fatai were recorded soliciting money from Dutch tourist Ms. Noraly Schoenmaker on October 29, 2023.

According to the police boss, the duo defied numerous orders and directives against professional misconduct, extortion, incivilities towards members of the public, and corruption.
