‘Osimhen, Awoniyi good for Arsenal’

The Mirror UK has identified five alternative strikers Arsenal should consider signing as an alternative to Manchester City star Gabriel Jesus who is being linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium in the summer, with Union Berlin’s Taiwo Awoniyi and Napoli ace Victor Osimhen making the cut.

The stumbling block to Arsenal signing the Brazil national teamer is his asking price, with Manchester City valuing the forward at £55 million despite the striker having approximately one year left on his contract with the Premier League champions.

Arsenal is in the market for at least two strikers following the permanent departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Barcelona in the January transfer window, while the futures of Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are up in the air with both out of contract at the end of June.

Awoniyi and Osimhen’s names are on the list of alternative options along with Gianluca Scamacca (Sassuolo), Jonathan David (Lille) and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton).

Awoniyi ended the 2021-2022 campaign with 20 goals to his name in all competitions, a career-best in a single season for the 24-year-old, while Osimhen notched 18 goals but played eleven games fewer than his international teammate.

Making a case for Awoniyi, David Alexander Hughes noted that he’s big, strong, and holds the ball up well, but most importantly he has a real eye for goal.

On Osimhen, he wrote: “He stands at 6ft1 and has an outstanding leap on him, making him a real asset from set-pieces and crossing situations.

“He’s also extremely mobile despite his size, great at leading a line or making selfless runs into the channels to create spaces for others.”
