OpenAI has appointed retired Army General Paul Nakasone, a former top US cyberwarrior and intelligence official, to its board of directors.
Nakasone, who served as the commander of US Cyber Command and director of the National Security Agency before stepping down earlier this year, is expected to help safeguard the ChatGPT maker from “increasingly sophisticated bad actors”.
He joins an OpenAI board that is still in the process of restructuring after significant upheaval last year.
After abruptly firing CEO Sam Altman, the previous board was replaced when Altman returned to his position days later.
In March, OpenAI reinstated Mr. Altman to its board of directors, expressing “full confidence” in his leadership following an external investigation into the company’s internal issues.
OpenAI’s board, although technically a nonprofit, oversees its rapidly expanding business operations.
Mr. Nakasone is also set to join OpenAI’s newly established safety and security committee, which is responsible for advising the full board on “critical safety and security decisions” concerning its projects and operations.
The newly formed safety group replaced a previous safety team that was disbanded after several of its leaders resigned.
Mr. Nakasone was leading the army branch of US Cyber Command when then-president Donald Trump appointed him as director of the NSA and head of US Cyber Command in 2018.
He continued to hold these dual roles under President Joe Biden until his retirement in February.
