OpenAI has unveiled a prototype of its new search engine, SearchGPT, designed to deliver fast and relevant answers with clear, reliable sources.
Announcing the launch of the tool on Thursday, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman said the company wanted to make search better than it is currently.
“We think there is room to make search much better than it is today. We are launching a new prototype called SearchGPT. We will learn from the prototype, make it better, and then integrate the tech into ChatGPT to make it real-time and maximally helpful,” Altman said in a post on X.

This move is seen as a potential challenge to Google’s dominance in the search engine industry. Since the debut of ChatGPT in November 2022, Alphabet investors have expressed concerns that OpenAI might capture market share from Google by offering innovative ways for users to access information online.
SearchGPT aims to enhance the search experience by allowing users to interact in a more natural and conversational manner, including the capability to ask follow-up questions.
The announcement led to a drop in Alphabet’s stock, which fell over 3% to close at $167.28, while the Nasdaq decreased by less than 1%.
In response to the shifting search landscape, Google introduced AI Overview in May, which CEO Sundar Pichai called the most significant change in search in 25 years.
