North Korea is set to enhance its military capabilities with the introduction of a new 240mm multiple rocket launcher this year, as reported by state-run media on Saturday.

The announcement follows North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s supervision of a live-fire test of the “technically updated” rocket system on Friday, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The KCNA further stated that the upgraded rocket launcher will gradually replace existing equipment within the Korean People’s Army units from 2024 to 2026.

Kim Jong Un also discussed plans to elevate production levels of the new rocket launcher system and its shells to the “highest level”.

This development is expected to bring about a significant enhancement in the army’s artillery combat capabilities, according to the KCNA report.

The news comes amidst strained inter-Korean relations and heightened tensions between North Korea and the United States, with Pyongyang designating South Korea as its “principal enemy” and facing allegations of supplying munitions and military equipment to Russia in support of its war efforts in Ukraine.
