The Nigerian military has debunked allegations of coup plots rumour circulating online, saying it’s an imagination of mischief-makers
Recall that reports on Sunday which emanated from some media platforms claimed the the Presidential Guards Brigade had been put on high alert following unusual movements, leading to suspicions of a coup plot in Nigeria.
The report also claimed that the development prompted an emergency meeting between President Bola Tinubu and the commander of the Guards Brigade.
However, the Acting Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, said in a statement that the claims are malicious and unfounded.
The statement asserts that a publication made claims, including the convening of an emergency meeting involving President Bola Tinubu, the Chief of Staff to the President, and the Commander of the Guards Brigade, due to suspicion. The Defence Headquarters strongly refutes this allegation, labelling it as entirely false.
It clarifies that the Guards Brigade is entrusted with the duty of safeguarding the seat of power (the Presidency) and the Federal Capital Territory, along with its surroundings, by statutory assignment. Consequently, the Brigade maintains a constant state of readiness to fulfill its mandated responsibilities effectively.
Can the rumours be taken seriously?
The Defence Headquarters reiterates that the allegation is unfounded and emphasises the Guards Brigade’s consistent vigilance in executing its designated duties.
The call for a coup by some individuals in the country comes amid the economic hardship facing the citizens as a result of Tinubu’s economic reforms which include the floating of the naira and the removal of fuel subsidy.
Many citizens, especially youth, have protested the hardship across the country. These protests have taken place in Oyo, Niger, Kano, and other areas over the past weeks.
