The Nigerian government has unveiled plans to establish Blood Collection Centres in all 774 local government areas across the country, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
This move is part of efforts to address the persistent issue of blood shortages during medical emergencies and transfusions.
In a statement released on Saturday in Abuja by Abdullahi Haruna, Head of Media and Publicity for the National Blood Service Agency (NBSA), the initiative aims to ensure a reliable supply of blood in critical situations.
Prof. Saleh Yuguda, Director-General of the NBSA, reaffirmed the government’s dedication to tackling the issue of blood shortages nationwide.
“We are working relentlessly to ensure that the nation’s blood needs are met, and this initiative is a major step toward achieving that goal,” Yuguda stated.
He stressed the importance of the project, saying, “This will save countless lives, and we are fully committed to making it a reality.”
Yuguda also disclosed that the NBSA has partnered with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to establish a well-stocked blood bank at the Corps’ medical facility.
The collaboration aims to alleviate blood shortages during emergencies and provide vital support to other security agencies.
“We are joining forces to ensure our medical facilities are equipped to handle emergencies, and this partnership reflects our dedication to saving lives,” he added.
The establishment of Blood Collection Centres in every local government area represents a significant step toward addressing the country’s blood shortage challenges.
Through this initiative, government seeks to ensure that blood is readily available during medical crises, ultimately helping to save lives.
