Nigeria and Tanzania’s extreme poverty levels have dropped by 7% after internet exposure, a new World Bank report reveals.
The World Bank reported an 8 percent increase in employment with improved internet accessibility.
Emphasizing the positive impact of digital inclusion on job creation and poverty reduction, a flagship report found a 7 percent decline in extreme poverty in Nigeria and Tanzania after three or more years of internet exposure. Labor force participation and wage employment also increased by up to 8 percent.
The organization stressed the need for a comprehensive approach to achieve a vibrant digital economy beyond basic internet access.
Internet usage in Sub-Saharan Africa rose by 115 percent through various World Bank projects, contributing to the Digital Economy for Africa initiative aiming for digital enablement by 2030.
Despite progress, the report highlighted challenges such as lagging digital infrastructure in sub-Saharan Africa.
While 84% had 3G service availability and 63% had 4G coverage in 2021, only 22% used mobile internet services.
Affordability and the digital gender gap were key concerns, with the cost of mobile data exceeding recommended levels. Additionally, approximately 470 million people lacked proof of ID in 2021, hindering access to crucial services.
World Bank Chief Economist for Africa, Andrew Dabalen, expressed concern over the underutilization of mobile internet, viewing it as a missed opportunity for inclusive growth.
Closing the uptake gap was emphasized as vital for job creation and economic recovery in a rapidly digitalized world.
