The wife and son of ousted Nigerien President Mohammad Bazoum have been released from house arrest.
They were placed under house arrest by the military junta after Bazoum’s overthrow on July 26, 2023. The tribunal granted provisional release to the family members, but no information was provided regarding the president’s fate.
ECOWAS had issued an ultimatum to the coup leaders, warning of military intervention if Bazoum was not reinstated.
In response, member states suspended relations with Niger and closed land and air borders with the country.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Tuggar, commended the release of dethroned Niger President Mohammad Bazoum’s wife and son from house arrest.
Tuggar, also the Chairperson of the Mediation and Security Council of ECOWAS, sees this as a positive step towards restoring normalcy in Niger and the region.
He urged the Niger government to expedite the release of Mohammed Bazoum, allowing him to travel to a third country, facilitating further discussions on lifting sanctions and transitioning to constitutional rule for the benefit of Niger and regional stability.
