Several people were injured following a massive collision involving over 100 cars on an icy section of an expressway in Suzhou, China, on Friday.

This incident is the latest in a series of accidents triggered by extreme weather conditions.

Dramatic footage from state television CCTV and social media depicted numerous cars clustered together chaotically on the highway, with one vehicle jackknifed at a severe angle in the air.

Glass and debris were strewn across the scene.

According to Suzhou Industrial Park traffic police’s WeChat social media account, three individuals were injured and hospitalized, while six sustained minor scratches.

The police stated that road traffic has been restored, and an investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.

In recent weeks, China has experienced cold waves, blizzards, and icy rain, impacting transportation as millions of people travel home for Lunar New Year celebrations.

As reported by Xinhua News, the government has escalated its emergency response to address freezing temperatures and has put in place diverse strategies to regulate transportation, supplies, and electricity in regions and municipalities including Beijing, Hebei, Shanxi, Anhui, and Hubei.

Additionally, the China Meteorological Administration has issued heightened alerts for freezing temperatures in multiple central and southern areas.

CCTV reported, based on VariFlight’s weather warning data, that 34 airports out of more than 260 across the country have issued warnings for fog and snow.
