Moroccan media reported on Wednesday that Morocco plans to acquire a spy satellite from Israeli Aerospace Industries (IAI) in a $1 billion deal.

On Tuesday, the state-owned IAI (ISRAI.UL) announced a $1 billion contract to supply one of its systems to an undisclosed third party.

IAI, renowned for its production of Israel’s cutting-edge drones and missile defense systems, stated in a Tel Aviv regulatory filing that the agreement will unfold over a five-year period.

According to Moroccan news websites Le Desk and Le 360, citing Israeli sources in Rabat, under the contract, IAI will deliver the Ofek 13 surveillance satellite to replace two Airbus and Thales satellites.

Neither the head of the Israeli mission in Rabat nor Morocco’s foreign ministry responded to a Reuters request for comment.

In 2021, Israel and Morocco reached a defense pact encompassing intelligence sharing and cooperation in military industurement.
