Microsoft revealed in its fourth annual Work Trend Index report on Wednesday that 75% of knowledge workers globally are using generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in their workplaces.
Over the past six months, the adoption of generative AI has nearly doubled, with 46% of users starting to use it during this period, as per the report.
Microsoft highlighted that employees are adopting AI without explicit direction or approval from top management, indicating a phenomenon of AI inertia among leaders.
Although 79% of leaders acknowledge the importance of integrating AI for maintaining competitiveness, concerns about cybersecurity and data privacy persist, according to the report.
Two-thirds of employers indicated they wouldn’t consider hiring someone lacking AI skills, with 71% expressing a preference for less experienced candidates with AI skills over more experienced ones without.
Consequently, there was a 142-fold increase in skills such as Copilot and ChatGPT being added to LinkedIn profiles last year.
The report also highlights that 68% of individuals struggle with the pace and volume of their workload, with 46% experiencing burnout.
However, power users—those who engage with AI multiple times a week—reported experiencing increased creativity (92%), better focus (93%), higher motivation (91%), and greater job satisfaction (91%).
Additionally, they save over 30 minutes daily, according to the report.
The Work Trend Index Annual Report conducts global surveys across various industries and includes observational studies to provide unique insights into the trends shaping work for employees and leaders alike.
