A man, who was arrested for assaulting a woman with a box cutter, reportedly shot two officers in a Paris police station on Thursday after seizing one of their weapons.
A source close to the case disclosed that the incident occurred in the French capital’s 13th district shortly before 10:30 p.m. (2030 GMT) on Thursday, May 9, 2024. He also mentioned that one of the officers sustained life-threatening injuries.
Paris police chief Laurent Nunez arrived at the scene around midnight, accompanied by prosecutor Laure Beccuau.
Nunez informed reporters that the suspect had been apprehended at approximately 10:00 pm for a “very violent attack on a woman” with a box cutter.
“The officers intervened and brought him back here (to the police station), and it was during his processing that he snatched the weapon” and “seriously” wounded the two officers, he said.
The officers were promptly transported to the hospital, along with the suspect, who was himself seriously wounded by return fire, Nunez added.
“We are very concerned about the officers’ health,” he continued, commending the station staff’s “courage and responsiveness”.
Nunez mentioned that an investigation was underway to determine the “circumstances” surrounding the incident.
When contacted by AFP, the prosecutor’s office stated that three investigations had been initiated — one regarding the “attempted murder of the woman”, and another concerning the “attempted murder of persons holding public authority”.
The third investigation was conducted by the IGPN, the national police’s internal affairs department, to examine the use of “intentional violence with a weapon by a person holding public authority.”
