Simon Githu Mbugua, aged 61, faced charges at Milimani Law Courts on Tuesday for posing as a high court advocate and distributing fraudulent demand letters to unsuspecting individuals.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) disclosed that Mbugua allegedly swindled Kenyans out of Ksh 20,000 ($141.53) through his scheme.
Detectives from the Serious Crime Unit apprehended Mbugua on Monday along Muindi Mbingu Street in Nairobi’s CBD after he dispatched a demand letter, falsely representing himself as Winny A. Ochwal Advocates – Commissioner for Oaths.
Additionally, a search conducted at his office in Kimathi House yielded a stamp inscribed with “WINNY A. OCHWAL ADVOCATES,” believed to have been used in the fraudulent activity.
The suspect, Simon Githu Mbugua, was released on Ksh 100,000 ($707.67) cash bail pending the hearing of his case on March 5, 2024.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), a stamp reading “WINNY A. OCHWAL ADVOCATES” was discovered in his office at Kimathi House prior to his arrest and subsequent booking at Muthaiga Police Station.
His release comes amid a nationwide crackdown by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) on fake lawyers, with over thirty individuals apprehended since the initiative commenced in January.
