Mali’s military junta suspends political activities following calls for presidential elections

Mali's military junta
The military's takeover in Mali, which led to the removal of former president Ibrahim Keïta and his government, was met with approval by the residents of Bamako.

Mali’s ruling military junta has suspended all political activities, citing the need to maintain public order.

The decree, issued by junta leader Colonel Assimi Goita, suspends political party and association activities nationwide until further notice.

This decision follows a joint call by over 80 political parties and civil groups for prompt presidential elections and an end to military governance on April 1st.

The continuous rule by juntas in Mali since the coups in 2020 and 2021 has led to a deteriorating security situation, along with a humanitarian and political crisis.

Initially, the junta announced that presidential elections would take place in February 2022, with power returning to civilians by March 26.

However, the elections were delayed, and the junta has not provided any further clarity on their plans.

Colonel Abdoulaye Maiga defended the halt of party activities due to what he called “sterile discussions” in a recent national dialogue.

The opposition has faced significant suppression during the junta’s governance.

In March, the junta prohibited the operations of a unique opposition coalition, claiming concerns about “potential disruptions to public order.”

It’s notable that the group criticized military rule and suggested a new approach for Malians who have been affected by extremist groups like al Qaeda and Daesh since 2012.

The UN reported the dissolution of four organizations in Mali, including those focused on governance, elections, and opposition.

Since taking control in 2020, the junta has severed ties with the EU and France, opting for stronger connections with Russia.
