On Monday, a coalition of Malian political parties and civil society organisations filed an appeal with the Supreme Court, seeking to overturn the junta’s prohibition on political activities.
In their statement, the coalition expressed their intent to challenge the decree they perceive as tyrannical and oppressive, with the ultimate goal of having it annulled by Mali’s highest court.
On April 10, the ruling junta in Mali suspended all political parties and activities, citing a demand made on March 31 by over 80 political parties and civil society organisations for a swift return to constitutional order through prompt presidential elections.
Since a coup in 2020, followed by another in 2021, the West African nation has been under military rule.
Initially, the transitional government pledged to reinstate civilian governance by March 2024, subsequent to elections held in February of the same year.
However, in September, authorities announced an indefinite postponement of the elections.
