Malawi has lifted visa requirements for visitors from 79 countries in a significant move to boost tourism.

The country’s president, Lazarus Chakwera, told Parliament on Friday, February 9, 2024.

“Tourism is the third-largest source of foreign currency in the impoverished southern African nation, after tobacco and tea — but the sector is underperforming.

“Chief among the factors contributing to this is our country’s accessibility, which is why we have implemented the visa waiver program,” he said.

The United States, Britain, France, China, Russia, and members of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), a regional bloc, are among the countries benefiting from the exemption.

However, this exemption does not apply to countries that impose visa requirements on Malawian citizens.

Additionally, certain groups like diplomats and government officials, along with countries having mutual exchange agreements for multiple-entry visas with Malawi, are also exempt from these regulations.

Additionally, the validity of multiple entry visas in Malawi has been extended to up to 12 months under the new visa regulations.

“This monumental decision isn’t just about visas; it’s about unleashing the untapped potential of our beloved Malawi and inviting the world to experience its wonders first-hand,” Tourism Minister Vera Kamtukule told local media.
