Kenya’s Airports Authority (KAA) assured on Friday that contingency plans are in place to maintain airport operations despite a strike scheduled to begin on August 19 by the country’s main aviation union.
The Kenya Aviation Workers Union, representing staff at airports and Kenya Airways, has announced a strike set to begin on Monday.
The industrial action is prompted by a proposed deal with India’s Adani Airports Holdings for the development of Nairobi’s largest airport.
The union has criticized the Adani deal, claiming it could lead to job losses and an influx of non-Kenyan workers, referring to it as the “intended sale” of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
However, the Kenyan government has countered that the airport is not for sale and that no final decision has been made regarding the proposed public-private partnership to upgrade the airport.
The Kenya Airports Authority stated, “Talks are continuing among the Ministry of Roads and Transport, Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, KAA Management, and Kenya Aviation Workers Union to achieve a mutually acceptable resolution.”
