Kano auto crash claims 18, 12 injured – FRSC

A fatal auto crash on Kano–Ringim road in Gabasawa Local Government Area of Kano State, on Friday, claimed 18 lives.

The Kano State Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander, Mr Ibrahim Abdullahi, said that the the accident involved two commercial vehicles.

He said some casualties in the accident were given mass burial at the spot while other bodies were handed over to their relatives.

Abdullahi said the accident was caused by excessive speeding, dangerous driving and overloading, which he said, resulted in head-on collision, leaving one of the vehicles bursting into flames.

He confirmed the incident in a press statement issued by the sector’s spokesman, Mr Abdullahi Labaran.

The state sector commander said: “We received a call about the accident at about 8:35 p.m on Friday and dispatched our personnel to the scene to rescue the victims.”

He advised motorists to avoid overloading, wrongful overtaking, speeding, dangerous driving as well as any violation that could lead to fatal road crashes.

Abdullahi expressed concerns over the spate of avoidable road fatalities in the state lately.

“The accident involved a total of 35 passengers in two buses, out of which 18 were burnt beyond recognition, while 12 others suffered varying degrees of serious injuries,” he said.

The state sector commander said that those who suffered injuries in the accident were taken to the Murtala Mohammed General HospitaI, Kano.

He disclosed that the state command would embark on public enlightenment campaign, with stringent patrol intervention, as well as collaboration with mobile courts towards reducing inter-city auto accidents.
