Suspected Islamist rebels killed at least 10 people in an overnight attack on the village of Masala in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, according to local officials and a civil society leader.
The attack occurred in Beni territory, North Kivu province, on Friday night, said military administrator Charles Euta Omeonga.
Civil society leader Justin Kavalami identified the attackers as members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), the same group blamed for another village assault earlier this week that resulted in at least 16 deaths.
Kavalami reported that the attack in Masala resulted in over 13 deaths.
The ADF, originally from neighbouring Uganda and now based in eastern Congo, has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and conducts frequent attacks, adding to the instability in a region already plagued by numerous militant groups. The ADF was not available for comment.
