The Iranian cutting-edge warships have taken part in the joint naval exercise with China and Russia dubbed Security Belt 2024.

Naval forces of Iran, Russia, and China have initiated a joint exercise in the Sea of Oman amid escalating tensions in the region due to the Israeli campaign in Gaza.

The “Marine Security Belt 2024” drills commenced on Tuesday and are set to include over 20 ships, support vessels, combat boats, and naval helicopters from the three nations.

According to the media headquarters of the joint drills, Russia’s Varyag missile cruiser and the Marshal Shaposhnikov frigate will participate, along with China’s guided-missile destroyer Urumqi and guided-missile frigate Linyi, alongside 10 warships from Iran.

Admiral Mostafa Tajaddini, the spokesperson for the drill, stressed the extensive scope of the exercise, covering 17,000 square kilometers (6,600 square miles) of water.

He also said that the maneuver’s goal is to boost “the security of international maritime trade, combating piracy and maritime terrorism,” according to a report by Iranian state media.
Russia’s Defence Ministry also said the exercises, which will run through Friday, would focus on the protection of “maritime economic activity” as well.

China’s Defence Ministry, for its part, said the drills are aimed at “jointly maintaining regional maritime security.”
“China will send … guided-missile destroyer Urumqi, guided-missile frigate Linyi and comprehensive supply ship Dongpinghu to participate in the exercise,” the ministry stated in a statement.
In recent years, Iranian naval forces, alongside their Chinese and Russian counterparts, have conducted numerous military drills aimed at bolstering the security and stability of international maritime trade.
These exercises have also focused on joint efforts to combat piracy and maritime terrorism, involving the exchange of information in naval rescue and relief operations, as well as sharing operational and tactical experience.
The latest drills mark the fifth joint military exercise by the three nations in recent years and take place amidst Israel’s genocidal campaign in Gaza.
Additionally, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Oman, Pakistan, and South Africa are serving as observers of the drills.
