Palestinian fighters, also known as Hamas, have freed a four-year-old American girl who witnessed the murder of both her parents after 50 days in captivity.
The Washington Post reported that on October 7, 2023, a three-year-old girl named Abigail was at home with her 10 and 6-year-old siblings in a kibbutz on the Gaza Strip border when Hamas terrorists attacked.
Abigail’s siblings survived by hiding in a closet for 14 hours before being rescued. Tragically, the children’s mother was shot, and their father, trying to protect Abigail, was also killed.
Initially presumed dead, Abigail crawled out from under her father’s body and sought refuge at a neighbor’s house. The terrorists took Abigail and a family of five to the Gaza Strip along with other civilians.
Last Friday, Abigail turned four while in captivity. U.S. President Joe Biden expressed horror at what she endured.
Abigail was released on Sunday as part of an agreement between Israel and Hamas, making her the first U.S. citizen among the freed hostages.
Although joyful about her release, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged the sadness of her returning to a reality without parents.
“What a joy it is to see her with us, but on the other hand, it is also sad that she is returning to a reality in which she has no parents,” said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a video posted on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.
“She has no parents, but she has an entire nation that hugs her, and we will take care of all her needs,” Netanyahu said.
Abigail will now be reunited with her siblings and live with her aunt, uncle, and grandparents in Israel. Since Friday, 58 hostages have been released, with another 10 expected to be released on Monday.
