Haiti’s newly installed transitional council has appointed former sports minister Fritz Belizaire as the country’s prime minister, amid ongoing efforts to establish a stable new government amidst pervasive violence.
Belizaire replaces Michel Patrick Boisvert, the former minister of economy and finance, who served as interim prime minister.
The nine-member transitional council, with seven voting members, is working to select a new prime minister and cabinet to address the rampant gang violence plaguing the capital, Port-au-Prince, and beyond. Belizaire garnered support from four of the voting members.
Following Belizaire’s appointment, the council reconvened behind closed doors to deliberate on the composition of the cabinet.
