France’s National Assembly has turned down a lawmaker’s proposal to rename a France-Palestine study group in the lower house of parliament as a “friendship group” due to a lack of votes, according to reports on Wednesday from local media.
The decision was announced by the Office of the National Assembly regarding the suggestion to change the name of the France-Palestine International Research Group to the France-Palestine Friendship Group, as reported by public broadcaster FranceInfo.
With 11 votes against and eight in favor, the motion was rejected. The Socialist Party (PS) group in the assembly expressed disappointment over the outcome.
Some left-wing members saw the establishment of the France-Palestine Friendship Group as a potential step towards France recognising a Palestinian state.
