At least four people have tragically died, and 16 others have been injured following the collapse of a popular beach bar on the Spanish island, Mallorca, on Thursday night, according to the latest update from the island’s emergency services.
Authorities have confirmed that nine of the injured individuals are in serious condition, while seven others are in critical condition.
After the building collapsed, emergency services swiftly responded to extract survivors and recover bodies from the debris.
The devastating incident unfolded at the Medusa Beach Club, located in the vibrant tourism hub on Palma Beach, just outside the island’s capital city.
Initial reports suggest that the collapse originated from the bar’s second floor, which subsequently collapsed onto the ground floor, causing further structural damage into the basement, where many victims were found.
While investigations are ongoing, preliminary findings point to excess weight on the second floor as the likely cause of the collapse, as reported by the Diario de Mallorca newspaper.
Although authorities have not yet identified the victims, El Pais has reported that among the deceased are three women, one of whom was an employee at the bar, and a male patron.
Additionally, the Mallorca Zeitung, a German-language newspaper based on the island, has suggested that individuals from Germany or the United Kingdom may also be among the casualties.
