No fewer than four people died after a fire broke out at a hospital in Italy.
The incident occurred at St. John the Evangelist hospital on the outskirts of Rome on Friday night, December 8, 2023.
Patients and staff were forced to evacuate and people in the intensive care ward at the medical centre in Tivoli were immediately rushed to other hospitals via ambulance.
According to the Tivoli mayor’s office, around 200 patients were moved into a nearby municipal gymnasium to await a transfer to other facilities.
Footage from the scene showed fire crews on ladders trying to reach the upper floors of the hospital as smoke billowed out.
Pictures showed the black-charred side of the building, with the fire appearing to have spread across multiple floors.
Tivoli, which is around 20 miles northeast of the centre of Rome, is a popular tourist destination.
It is best known for the archaeological sites of Villa d’Este and Villa Adriana.
