A total of four buildings have collapsed and 14 others were seriously impacted due to the intensity of the fire that engulfed part of Dosunmu Market on Lagos Island, Southwest Nigeria.
Ibrahim Farinloye, Lagos Territorial Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), gives an update on the incident that occurred on Tuesday, April 9, 2024.
According to sources, Farinloye said the cause of the fire could be attributed to the refuelling of a running generator at the market, which resulted in the fire not being contained.
Emergency responders at the scene of the event included NEMA, Federal and State Fire Services, the Nigeria Police, and the fire service of the Nigeria Ports Authority.
This incident is coming barely three weeks after SaharaReporters reported how four buildings were destroyed by an inferno at the same market.
On Monday a three-storey building located at Breadfruit Street, Balogun Market in Lagos State was gutted by fire.
A press statement made available by Margaret Adeseye, Director of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service disclosed that the fire started from the second floor of the building.
