The justice ministry reported that 47 inmates escaped from a maximum security prison in Liberia’s Margibi County, located east of Monrovia, over the weekend.
Preliminary investigations revealed the breakout occurred due to a security system breach.
Authorities expressed deep concern over the incident and stated they are taking all necessary steps to ensure the recapture of the escapees.
The ministry announced that extra officers were dispatched to aid in the search for the escaped prisoners, urging the public to stay calm and provide any information that might assist in their recapture.
Authorities also advised the fugitives to surrender at the nearest police station or to prison officials to avoid further charges.
